Hearth & Tool exists for one reason: most home improvement advice online is either written for contractors or written by nobody — thin, recycled articles that leave you more confused than before you searched.
We do it differently. Every guide on this site follows the same process:
- Research against real sources. Manufacturer specifications, building codes and the accumulated wisdom of tradespeople — not other blog posts.
- Written for a real beginner. We assume you have basic tools, a normal budget, and zero jargon tolerance. If a step needs a photo or a measurement, it gets one.
- Honest about limits. When a job genuinely needs a professional — gas, structural work, main electrical panels — we say so clearly instead of pretending everything is a DIY job.
Our free calculators follow the same philosophy: they use the same coverage formulas professionals use, and they're free with no sign-up.
Hearth & Tool is an independent publication. We currently keep the lights on through display advertising, which lets us keep every guide and tool free for you.
